Methods for determination of the organic, inorganic and aerosol forms of radioactive Iodine I-131 in air samples

  • 1. Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy, Sofia (Bulgaria)

Description

Determination of the different iodine-131 forms in the releases from ventilation systems is of great significance for the estimation of the radioactive emissions from nuclear facilities. The behavior of different types of activated charcoal under attack with elemental iodine and methyliodide with tracer I-131 was investigated. The algorithm of interaction between the charcoal and radioactive gases was established and a methodology was developed for determination of different I-131 forms in air samples. The methodology was tested in real conditions (Kozloduy NPP). This approach allows controlling the environment as well as the air in the working premises of the nuclear plant. (authors)
