Description

This paper presents the methodology for conducting a systematic human factors assessment of the as-built configuration of buildings at the Rocky Flats Plant (RFP). In support of this effort, the Human Factors Engineering (HFE) group developed the HFE Topic Evaluation Plan (TEP), which outlines the current design requirements (CDRs) and the approach for identifying and assessing the significance of differences between the as-built configurations of structures, systems and components (SSCs) and HFE CDRs for all high and moderate hazard buildings. Results thus far include the knowledge of the as-built configuration of several structures, and several 'lessons learned' during the implementation of the TEP. The results of the initial screenings of several buildings will be used to determine transition activities to support the new RFP mission--environmental restoration and clean-up. In addition, the results provide input into process control activities required to support the new mission, such as transportation and storage of waste, and human factors issues relative to worker safety associated with the determination and testing, storage, and transportation of waste. The potential uses and implications of the information obtained as a result of the program are also discussed
