Description

Detailed studies were carried out on the control of corrosion of carbon steel, aluminium brass and cupronickel in a closed demineralized (DM) water (pH 8.5-9.5) system using nitrite-borate-benzotriazole and hydrazine. In the case of nitrite-borate-benzotriazole best results were obtained when a combination of 1200 ppm NaNO2, 500 ppm borax and 4 ppm benzotriazole was used. In the case hydrazine treatment, at concentration levels of 5-15 ppm, the corrosion rates of all the three materials were considerably lower than the permissible limits. Treatment with hydrazine is currently being tried in place of chromate for corrosion control in the closed recirculating process water cooling system in Madras Atomic Power Station.
