Synthesis of Selenium Nanoparticles by Electron Beam Irradiation using Gum Arabic as Stabilizing Agents

Description

Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) stabilized by gum arabic (GA), a highly water soluble natural polysaccharides, were fabricated by irradiation method under electron beam accelerator. The obtained gum arabic coated nanoparticles (SeNPs/GA) were characterized by many analytical techniques including UV-Vis, Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The stability of SeNPs/GA over time at two different storage conditions was also followed by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS). Research results showed that the SeNPs/GA were spherical with an average size of 30.7 nm apart from a population of small nanoparticles of 5 nm. The NPs of high purity were crystalline with hexagonal structure and they were stable in the liquid system up to 6 months either storaged at 4 oC or 27 oC. The results indicated that SeNPs/GA synthesized by electron beam irradiation could be potential selenium source for practical application. (author)
