Central neurocytoma: description of a case involving leptomeningeal hemosiderosis

  • 1. Hospital Duran y Reynals. Bellvitge. Hospitalet de Llobregat. Barcelona (Spain)

Description

The neurocytoma is a well-differentiated tumor of neural strain and low-grade malignancy that recently underwent clinico pathological typing. It nos often presents as a heterogenous lesion with cystic areas and tumor calcifications that are typically located within the lateral ventricle during the third decade of life. The radiological findings are characteristic and the correct diagnosis has an important clinical impact given that under light microscopy, it may be indistinguishable from an oligodendroglioma or ependymomas, and its identification requires immunohistochemical or electron microscopy study. Bleeding is not characteristic of neurocytoma. We present a case of neurocytoma with the unusual finding of leptomeningeal hemosiderosis as a sign of chronic bleeding. (Author) 13 refs
