Velocity and atomic number dependence of the transient magnetic field in iron

Description
The γ- and Z-dependence of the transient magnetic field in iron have been investigated for light ions. From existing data and the present work on transient fields for 20Ne and 24Mg at initial velocities up to γsub(i)/γ0=8 (γ0=c/137) a marked atomic shell structure has been found in the Z-dependence for Z<=26. This dependence can be described by a simple expression if the fields are assumed to be due to polarized electrons in s-shells. For 20Ne and 24Mg the linear γ-dependence of the transient field has been confirmed. The results are discussed in the framework of an atomic model. (Auth.)
