Measurement and decontamination of the clothing contaminated by Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station accident

Immediately after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station Accident, radiation surveys were conducted for the local residents of the areas to be evacuated. Contamination was found to be remarkable. Japanese Radiation Safety Association organized a special ad hoc committee of clothing analysis group to investigate contamination problem for safety measures for iodine 131 and cesium 137. Decontamination effectiveness by washing methods in a normal washing procedure in an ordinal outdoor was investigated. Possibility of secondary contamination of the clothing in the washing step at home is pointed out from dehydration to dryness. (S. Ohno)
