On reaction of tributyl phosphite with iodine

Description

The interaction of TBP with iodine has been found to proceed rapidly in ether at a low temperature (-78 deg ). Under these conditions the yield of butyl iodide is only about 70% for the reacted iodine. The system TBP-iodine in ether at a low temperature is a strong oxidant. The interaction of TBP with iodine in the presence of triethylamine in hexane, ether, carbon tetrachloride or benzene at temperatures of from -20 to +25 deg gives triethylamine hydroiodate with yields of 60-85%, butyl hypoiodite and butyraldehyde
