Airborne gamma ray spectrometer measurements and radon. The application of airborne gamma ray spectrometry in identifying radon prone areas - an analysis based on measurements in the Oslo region
Description
The results of a comparison between airborne gamma ray spectrometer measurements and 6326 indoor radon measurements in the Oslo region performed by the Norwegian geological survey and the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority are presented. The results show that the percentage of dwellings with radon concentrations above the national action level of 200 Bq/m3 generally increases with increasing equivalent concentration of uranium in the ground. Hence, airborne gamma ray spectrometry is useful in identifying radon prone areas, but gamma measurements must always be combined with information on the permeability of the ground when assessing the radon potential of an area.
