Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty
Description
The debate, which lasted nearly an hour, is reported verbatim. The Non-Proliferation Treaty is due for a major examination in 1995 and the debate gave an opportunity for discussing not only the treaty but a nuclear test ban treaty, unilateral disarmament, the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and nuclear submarines. The government policy on non-proliferation was set out. First to keep North Korea within the Non-Proliferation Treaty, secondly to achieve an indefinite extension of the treaty in 1995 and thirdly, to strengthen the enforcement of the treaty which is the responsibility of the IAEA.
