Description
The standard policy in Japan is to support safety related structures directly on bedrock. This is because Japan is a country that is prone to earthquake. However, this becomes difficult for a site with deep bedrock. Placing the structure on deep bedrock affects the plant functions, construction duration, and construction cost. In order to satisfy both the standard policy and economic considerations, facilities other than the reactor building may be supported using piles or slurry walls that extend down to bedrock. This paper investigates the feasibility of this concept. Three different deep bedrock foundations of a turbine building are analyzed to investigate their seismic behavior, whose functional integrity is required against design seismic ground motions S 1*1 or S 2*2.
