Coating the inside surfaces of hollow sections with a tantalum layer for corrosion protection

Description

The coating of variouly shaped hollow sections such as tubing, valve chambers and nozzles with a nonporous tantalum layer for corrosion protection using the CVD-technique is described with reference to the example of the tubing system of a Siemens type 101 high-pressure liquid chromatograph. For this study, sections from V4A steel were chosen. Since the adhesion of CVD castings to steel depends on the deposition parameters, the optimum conditions were experimentally determined. Thus the deposition rate is seen to increase until a TaCl5 sublimation temperature of about 950C is reached. A volumetric hydrogen flow of 1 l/min at a sublimation temperature of 900C was found to be the optimum. Increasing the reaction (reduction) temperature (from 900 up to 1,1000C) led to a progressive increase in the deposition rate, but caused increasing outdiffusion of Fe, Ni, and Cr from the substrate into the tantalum layer and undesired formation of intermetallic compounds. In order to avoid the appearance of such intermediate layers which may decrease the adhesion of the tantalum coating, a deposition temperature not higher than 1,0000C should be used. Metallographic and corrosion-protection tests showed that the tantalum layers obtained by CVD-technique are of uniform thickness and resist corrosion. (IHOE)

Abstract (German)

(IHOE)
