Deposition and retention of inhaled 239PuO2 aerosols in new born and adult rats

Description

Adult and newborn rats were exposed to 239PuO2 aerosols of four different size distributions. Rats of both ages were killed at intervals between 1 hr and 60 days postexposure. There were marked age- and particle-related size differences in deposition, although retention was similar throughout. The differences in deposition are attributable to relatively greater deposition of larger particles in the upper respiratory tracts of newborns
