The effect of initial structure on the mechanical properties of VT6 titanium alloy specimens conjugated in a superplastic state

Description

Mechanical properties are studied on tension tests of two-phase titanium alloy VT6 specimens which are different in grain size and in the temperature of solid-phase joining by pressure welding in a superplastic state. It is shown that a mean grain size decrease down to submicrocrystalline values permits obtaining a pressure welded joint with ultimate strength of 1100 MPa. An unique combination of strength and plastic properties of VT6 alloy is due to preservation of its submicrocrystallinity at the expense of minimization of heat treatment and welding temperature and time
