Description

A simple model is proposed for determining the behavior of a high-current relativistic electron beam injected into a dense plasma, with allowance for the principal factors affecting the equilibrium dynamics of the beam-plasma system. The influence of the various parameters of the problem on the beam pinching process is investigated. It is shown that only two parameters play a significant role in practice - the initial rms angle of injection of the electrons, and the adiabatic exponent of the beam. Conditions are found for the results obtained to be applicable, taking into account the various assumptions made. The maximum degree of focusing possible in theory is discussed. 9 refs., 7 figs
