Description

This paper gives a selfcontained description of methods for studying perfect magnetohydrostatic stability of equilibrium structures. Examples relevant to the structures of the sun's atmosphere are systematically given as illustration. A more detailed account is given of the cylindrical pinch equilibrium problem, and relevant consequences for the statility of coronal arches are emphasized
