Solution topologies of polytropic winds

Description

We study steady polytropic wind flows by examining their solution topologies; effects included are departures from spherical symmetry and nonthermal momentum addition (such as by waves). The problem is first treated in full generality for the one-dimensional case; here we extend previous work on isothermal flows, and on the existence of degenerate solution topologies, to the nonisothermal case. We then examine the polytropic flow problem in the context of a specific model for the form of the streamlines which is taken from a dynamically consistent calculation of the form of open and closed field lines in a magnetosphere.
