Preoperative irradiation of the hypernephroma

Two groups of patients with renal cell carcinoma were compared to test the effect of preoperative short-term-radiation: 30 patients with hypernephroma, were treated by the same method (nephrektomy and postoperative radiation) and a further 30 patients were treated for one week with preoperative radiation (a total dose of 18 to 21 Gy), radical nephrektomy performed after a 3 to 4 day break and postoperative radiation. At the same time a clear increase was shown in the 3-year-survival period as well as that of the 5-year-period. Without preoperative radiotherapy 36,7% survived for 3 years and 33,4% for 5 years, with preoperative radiation 56,7% for 3 years and 50% for 5 years. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Um den Wirkungsgrad einer zusaetzlichen praeoperativen Kurzzeit-Bestrahlung beim Nierenkarzinom zu pruefen, wurden 2 Patientenkollektive miteinander verglichen: 30 Patienten mit Nierenkarzinom wurden nephrektomiert und nachbestrahlt, weitere 30 Patienten wurden mit 18 bis 21 Gy innerhalb einer Woche vorbestrahlt, nach 3 bis 4 Tagen nephrektomiert und nachbestrahlt. Dabei ergab sich eine deutliche Steigerung sowohl der 3- wie auch der 5-Jahres-Ueberlebensquoten. Ohne Vorbestrahlung lebten nach 3 Jahren noch 36,7%, nach 5 Jahren 33,4%, mit Vorbestrahlung nach 3 Jahren noch 56,7% und nach 5 Jahren 50%. (orig.)
