Radiotherapy after radical surgery for breast cancer

Two-hundred-eighty-seven cases of breast cancer in which extended radical surgery was performed were divided into n0, n1α, n1β and n2 groups for comparisons of local recurrence and distant metastasis after postoperative prophylactic irradiation. The prophylactic irradiation from the subclavicular toward supraclavicular regions after radical surgery was not meaningful. Complete dissection produced no significant difference between the irradiated and control groups. The rate of distant metastasis of the irradiated group was higher than the control group. (Chiba, N)
