Correlation studies of solar x-ray and radio bursts

Solar X-ray bursts observed by the UCSD 050-111 instrument between 1967 March 9 and 1968 January 31 are studied using a sample of more than 300 bursts having associated microwave emission. Spectral observations suggest that X-rays and associated microwave emission early in flare events arise from non thermal electron distributions. Studies of the time development of X-ray and microwave bursts support a model in which' soft X-rays arise from a Maxwellian electron distribution heated by collisional energy loss of energetic electrons. Under this assumption an estimate of ambient ion density in the X-ray region of is derived.
