Measurement of the average γ-ray dose with uniformly distributed sources

Description

A measurement of the average γ-dose in tissue with a uniformly distributed source (in a cylinder) is described. The detection of the absorbed energy in the tissue is achieved by substituting the tissue with a scintillation system containing 85% (by volume) water and measuring the scintillation light output by means of impulse height analysis. A special measuring technique had to be employed to avoid any interference from the α- or β-radiation that accompanies the γ-emission. Good agreement results with approximative calculations given in the literature. The method of measurement may be applied for other geometries of uniformly distributed sources. (author)
