Investigation of the amorphization process in crystalline boron

Description

Transformations in crystalline boron in the process of mechanical dispersion have been found previously. For a complete understanding and unifying interpretation of the process taking place during dispersion of crystalline boron it is important to undertake electron microscopic and electron diffraction examination of graded powders of dispersion boron. A scanning electron micrscope, ISM-50A, transmission electron microscope, IEM-100U, and reflection electrongraph were used for the examination of the dispersed powders. From data obtained a model is suggested for powder dispersion which is based on the following principle: in the process of dispersion, the surface of the crystal is deformed and fractured and a so-called 'amorphous pillow' appears around the crystal.
