γ-irradiation of superconducting Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O and its lead-dopes varieties

Description

Effects of γ-ray irradiation on Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Oy and Bi2-xPbxSr2Ca2Cu3Oy (x = 0.1 and 0.2) superconductors have been studied using a 60Co γ-ray source up to a maximum dose level of 300 Mrad. On irradiation of the undoped variety, a small decrease in its Tc value is observed up to a certain dose level after which it has no effect on Tc. In the case of lead doped samples with x = 0.1 the irradiation effect is more pronounced (Tc decreases from 94 K to 84 K) than where doping of lead is higher, i.e., x = 0.2 (Tc decreases from 96 K to 90 K), at a 100 Mrad dose level. The experimental results corroborate the X-ray powder diffraction data. (author)
