Burial of high-level and long-lived radioactive wastes in Antarctica: a reappraisal
Description
The safe and proper disposal of high-level and long-lived radioactive wastes is a major problem of both national and international importance. Consequently, Antarctica's isolation from human activities and the biosphere, as well as its aseismicity, makes it attractive as a possible burial site for radioactive wastes. Accordingly, I have undertaken a reappraisal of the issue of antarctic disposal principally in terms of the geology of the continent and also the subantarctic islands. In doing so, I have not limited my attention to the rock types commonly considered for radioactive burial sites
