Radioisotope powered AMTEC systems

  • 1. Advanced Modular Power Systems, Inc., Ann Arbor, MI (United States)

Description

Alkali Metal Thermal to Electric Converter (AMTEC) systems are being developed for high performance spacecraft power systems, including small systems powered by the General Purpose Heat Source (GPHS). Several design concepts have been evaluated for the power range from 75 W to 1 kW. The specific power for these concepts has been found to be as high as 18--20 W/kg and 22 kW/m3. The projected area has been as low as 0.4 m2/kW. These numbers are extremely attractive relative to other power system designs because it is both high power density and low volume. Two AMTEC cell design types have been identified. The single-tube cell is already under development. The multi-tube cell has been identified to provide additional power system gains
