Determining structural information from powders using small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)

Full text: Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) is an excellent technique to characterise the morphology of inhomogeneities in the bulk in the size range from 1 nm-several hundred nm's. SAXS is due to the electron density difference between the matrix and the inhomogeneity. It is an indirect imaging technique where information on the morphology of the inhomogeneity is determined by a transformation from reciprocal space to real space. I will introduce the fundamentals of SAXS and describe how SAXS can determine information from powder samples such as specific surface area, pore size and volume fraction.
