Electron irradiation of pyrolytic graphite at liquid helium temperature

Description

Electron irradiation experiments have been performed at liquid helium temperature on compressed annealed pyrolytic graphites. Stored energy measurements after sub-threshold irradiation following a first high energy irradiation with subsequent annealings suggest a mechanism of dispersion of loose interstitial pairs or groups by direct interaction of electrons with an effective cross section of about 106 barn. Measurements of the elastic constant using an ultrasonic 'pulse echo' technique at 10 MHz show a large change of the C44 shear constant with electron dose at 4 K. No change on annealing is observed below 50 K. (orig./IHOE)

Abstract (German)

An gepressten, waermebehandelten pyrolytischen Graphiten wurden Elektronenbestrahlungsversuche bei der Temperatur des fluessigen Heliums vorgenommen. Messungen der gespeicherten Energie nach Bestrahlung unterhalb des Schwellenwertes, die einer ersten Hochenergiebestrahlung mit anschliessender Gluehbehandlung folgten, weisen auf einen Dispersionsmechanismus loser Zwischengitterpaare oder -gruppen hin, der auf eine direkte Wechselwirkung von Elektronen mit einem effektiven Wirkungsquerschnitt von ca. 106 barn zurueckzufuehren ist. Messungen der elastischen Konstante mit einem 'Puls-Echo'-Ultraschallverfahren bei 10 MHz zeigen eine starke Veraenderung der Scherungskonstante C44 in Abhaengigkeit von der Elektronendosis bei 4 K. Unterhalb von 50 K ist keine Veraenderung nach der Waermebehandlung festzustellen. (orig./IHOE)
