Study of the corrosion of amalgams by radioactive tracer method

  • 1. Kossuth Lajos Tudomanyegyetem, Debrecen (Hungary). Izotop Lab.

Description

Effect of depolarizers (S2O8-2-and I3-) dissolved in 1 N H2SO4 on the corrosion of thallium and zinc amalgams, labelled with 2O4Tl and 65Zn has been studied. The rate constants and the activation energies of corrosion processes have been determined. According to the slope of the rate-curves the rate constants are as follows: ksub(S2O8)2-=5.8.10-4s-1, ksub(I3)-=7.0.10-4sH-1. The activation energies are the followings: Esub(S2O8)2-=3.0kcal, Esub(I3)-=3.4kcal. On the base of the obtained results the diffusion of depolarizer is the rate determining process of the corrosion of amalgams in the studied systems. (K.A.)
