Production and properties of ultracold neutrons
Description
One property of neutrons discovered by Zeld'dovitch in 1959 is that they can put in a bottle and carried home. This however only works for extremely slow, ultra cold neutrons which are not easy to produce. In 1969 Steyer (in Garching) and Lushchikov et al (in Dubna) solved some of the production problems and in 1971 the first successful containment of ultra cold neutron (UCNs) was achieved in Moscow. Since then UCNs have continued to be 'bottled up'. The methods and apparatus used in UCN research are unconventional and initial sceptism as to the value of UCNs had to be overcome. The production and properties of UCNs are summarized in this paper. (UK)
