Description

An experimental program is being carried out to investigate the activity release for severe fuel damage and core meltdown secenarios. The main objectives of the program are: to determine the fractional release of radiologically important elements in the temperature range 1500-2800 degrees C; and to characterize the physical and chemical behavior of the released material in the primary system. The elements listed were selected for two reasons: the nuclides of I, Cs, Te, Ba and Sr are the risk-dominating fission products, and the elements Ag, In and Cd are expected to be a substantial source for the overall aerosol mass. In addition, Ag has a potential for acting as an iodine sink by the formation of water insoluble AgI. Findings are presented
