Description

The detection of particle pulses using series arrays of large (0.5 mm-square) superconducting Al/AlOx/Al tunnel junctions is presented. The particle detection is mediated by phonons produced in the sapphire substrate. Coincident pulses were observed in two arrays of 18 junctions, from 5 MeV α-particles, from 662 keV γ-rays, and from 60 keV γ's. Applications of this device are discussed. (author) 3 refs.; 6 figs
