Study of the usability of methyl orange solution as a high dose dosimeter

Description
The possibility of using a methyl orange solution for the measurement of radiation absorbed dose resulted from Co60 gamma rays has been studied according to the radio-chromic change using visible spectrophotometry. The results of the spectral study of solution in the area of UV/visible showed an absorption peak appeared at 464 nm wavelength. This peak decreased with increasing the absorbed dose. The relationship between the relative absorbance and the absorbed dose at the concentration of 40 micro mol/L of the solution indicated the presence of a linear behaviour in the range of 0-1400 Gy. The dose rate has been investigated and it was found to be independent of the response. The effects of post-irradiation storage in dark and indirect daylight conditions on dosimeter performance were discussed. The effects of both irradiation and measurement temperature on absorption dose and their correction factors were found and discussed as well as the uncertainties. (authors)
