A half century of nuclear energy in Belgium

  • 1. University of Brussels, Brussels (Belgium)

Description

The story of nuclear energy in Belgium is full of ventures, some of which were successes and some failures. What remains today of all these endeavours? The successes are as follows: nuclear energy production which supplies 60% of demand and is achieved with optimum economy and availability; safety control which has proved itself with its specialised group of outstanding merit; research facilities of the very highest standard; an exceptional mastery of nuclear fuel manufacturing, particularly as regards the use of plutonium (NOX fuel), expertise in the disposal of radioactive waste and nuclear transport; a reoriented centre for nuclear research exploiting an exceptional facility, the high neutron flow BR2 reactor, and permitting the manufacture of radioelements; respected scientific participation in the European nuclear fusion programme. What other small country has a better record
