Modeling of metal sorption in a natural sediment-groundwater system

Description

A simple surface-complex model for heavy metal sorption in a natural sediment-grounwater system is presented. A surface-complexing constant for Nickel, strontium and Uranium is calculated for the Gorleben systems on the basis of experimentally determined distribution quotients, a groundwater analysis and the cation-exchange capacity of the sediment. The method for determining the prevalent surface complex is described exhaustively. The presented model is able to describe sorption in natural systems taking one further parameter into account. It correctly calculates the influence of the pH value, of the ratio of sediment mass to groundwater volume and of the concentration of sorbate and complexing agents in the groundwater. The calculations were performed with the geochemical computer code MINEQL. (orig.)

Abstract (German)

Ein einfaches Oberflaechenkomplexmodell zur Schwermetallsorption in einem natuerlichen Sediment-Grundwasser-System wird vorgestellt. Auf der Grundlage experimentell ermittelter Verteilungsquotienten, der Grundwasseranalyse und der Kationenaustauschkapazitaet des Sediments wird fuer Gorlebener Systeme eine Oberflaechenkomplexbildungskonstante fuer Nickel, Strontium und Uran berechnet. Das Verfahren zur Bestimmung des vorherrschenden Oberflaechenkomplexes wird ausfuehrlich dargestellt. Das vorgestellte Modell ist in der Lage, die Sorption in natuerlichen Systemen mit einem zusaetzlichen Parameter zu beschreiben. Es berechnet den Einfluss des pH-Wertes, des Verhaeltnisses Sedimentmasse/Grundwasservolumen, der Konzentration des Sorbats und der Konzentration von Komplexbildnern im Grundwasser auf die Sorption richtig. Die Berechnungen wurden mit dem geochemischen Rechenprogramm MINEQL durchgefuehrt. (orig.)
