Energy development and the local community

Description

The mayor of a town, the site for a nuclear power station, speaks of the attitude of local people, especially in connection with opposition to nuclear power. The places proposed for nuclear power stations are mostly in remote, rural regions, which are frequented by natural disasters such as flood; and the people are resigned to the fate. So, while recognizing the need for such power plants, the people are not easily persuaded to accept the safety of nuclear power generation only by academic explanations. It is essential to acquire people's trust in the safety of nuclear power through a considerate attitude by the authorities concerned. In this connection, cautions are issued to various governmental organs, with local autonomy, and also to outsiders concerned. (Mori, K.)
