Eu3+ ion magneto-optics in paramagnetic Eu3Ga5O12 garnet

Description

Temperature dependence of the Faraday effect (FE) us studied for a Eu3Ga5O12 rare earth (RE) garnet. The caracteristic feature of the RE Eu3+ ion is the fact that its ground state represents a 7Fo singlet with a zero total moment. A 7F1 triplet lies relatively close to the 7Fo ground state of the RE Eu3+ ion, at a distance of Δ1=350 cm-1; the next excited 7F2 multiplet lies at a distance of Δ2 approximately 103 cm-1 from the ground one. It is shown that, to the temperature dependence of FE and Eu3Ga5O12 garnet RE magnetization, it is necessary to take into account the thermal multiplet population F1 and ''admixture'' of 7F0 and F2 multiplet wave functions along with ''admixture'' of F17 and F0 multiplet states. The FE temperature dependence differs essentially from the temperature dependence of magnetization M(T)
