Irradiation creep
Description
It is more than thirty years since positive evidence of irradiation creep was first obtained. Since then this phenomenon has been measured for a wide range of metals and ceramics. Only now is some unifying picture of the processes that contribute to irradiation creep beginning to emerge. It appears that in many cases there are two important mechanisms. One is the irradiation-induced climb of dislocations and their subsequent glide under the influence of the applied stress. The other mechanism is polarisation of the climb process by the applied stress. Together these mechanisms seem likely to be able to explain the majority of the irradiation-creep observations on metals and alloys
