A Study on Safety Control Practices relevant to Nuclear Research Activities

Description
An aim of this study is to get lessons by collecting and analyzing safety-related accidents occurred already in the inside and outside of the country, and then to derive a measure for mitigating accidents, which is practically adoptable. In order to secure safety and to prevent safety-related accidents in nuclear research activities, published data on various accidents have been collected and analyzed. For simplicity, the accidents were categorized into chemical engineering/chemical discipline, electrical discipline, mechanical discipline and a field of radioactive material handling. The analysis results lead to take precautions against accidents and to set up a safety measure in nuclear research laboratories. In addition, current status of KAERI's existing fire-fighting facilities has been reviewed to suggest a desirable way to be revised. USNRC states that the primary element, which is able to secure safety of radiation workers, is a credible promise on safety consciousness and security of the top-manager to adhere strongly the safety-first principle in order to lead voluntarily research personnel to laboratory safety
