Description

We have determined crystal structure, magnetic and electronic properties for the new intermetallic YbNi0.8Al4.2compound, crystallizing in the orthorhombic YNiAl4-type structure with the space group Cmcm. The experimental data indicate that the compound behaves likely Kondo lattice system with a large Kondo temperature (∼1300 degree K). An analysis of magnetic susceptibility and valence-band XPS spectra reveals a noninteger valence of the Yb ions. YbNi0.8Al4.2 is characterized also by an enhanced power factor of 0.45 W/K m at room temperature
