Superstrings
Description
String theories offer a radically new perspective upon the problem of quantum gravitation and suggest moreover a total unification of all interactions between elementary particles. Starting point in these is that all known types elementary particles correspond with the various fundamental excitations of a minuscule string with a length of about 10-33 cm. In this introductory article some modern developments in particle physics are summarized and the most important properties of relativistic quantum strings are discussed. (author). 7 figs
