Determination of impurities in high purity barium fluoride by ICP-AES

  • 1. National Chemical Lab. for Industry, Yatabe, Ibaraki (Japan)

Description

ICP-AES was used for the determination of impurities (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Ni, Sr and Zn) in high purity barium fluoride samples. The calibration curve of Al was not linear when the standard addition method in the presence of fluorine was used. To remove fluorine, the powder sample (5 g) was dissolved in 25 ml of perchloric acid at 250 deg C for about 30 min in a platinum crucible. The residue was dissolved in 2 ml of nitric acid and diluted with deionized water to 50 ml. Elements (Al, Ca, Fe, Mg and Sr) in high concentrations were measured directly after one-fifth dilutions (matrix 2 %). DDTC-carbon tetrachloride extraction was used for preconcentration of low level elements (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn). The relative standard deviation was 10∼25 % for trace elements below 10 ppm.
