A record-breaking lifetime of the thick carbon stripper foil for PSR of LANL

Description
A thick carbon stripper foil made by mCADAD method has showed a great achievement of a record-breaking lifetime for 800 MeV, H+ ion beam irradiation in the proton storage ring (PSR) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The carbon foil is composed of multi-layer thickness of ∼240 μg/cm2 and a ribbon shape of 16x50 mm2 in area. The lifetime measurement of the foil was performed using an 800 MeV proton beam of up to 100 μA in the PSR. The lifetime obtained showed 4 times longer than that of the foil recorded in 1993 and it corresponds to approximately 17 times longer than commercially available standard foils. In addition, the life time measurement of the foils made by the mCADAD one was tested using a 3.2 MeV, Ne+ ion beam of ∼3 μA at Tokyo Institute of Technology. The foils showed also very long lifetime as compared to other foils tested for 3.2 MeV, Ne+ beam bombardments. (author)
