Ultrasound characteristics of posterior uveal melanomas treated with cobalt plaque radiotherapy

Description

Five eyes harboring posterior uveal melanomas were examined before and one year after treatment with cobalt plaque radiotherapy. Post-operatively, B-scan ultrasonograms revealed a change in the tumor's size and shape, a decrease in the area of echolucency within the tumor and the formation of new areas of echolucency within the sclera and orbital tissues. Standardized A-scan echograms showed an irregular acoustic structure, a higher reflectivity and wide orbital echoes. The average decrease in height was 37%. 5 refs.; 4 figs.; 1 table
