Search for the 8+ state in 16O nucleus

Description

The 12C(6Li, d)16O(α)12C process has been studied at Esub(6Li)=34.7 and 29 MeV in order to apply the dα angular correlation method to the search of the 8+ state in the 16O nucleus in the excitation energy region of 17-24 MeV. None of the groups of deuterons which coincide with α-particles from 16O decay into sup(12)Csub(g.s.)+α shows the correlation characteristic of the 8+ state. Estimation of the upper limit of the excitation cross section of the 8+ state gives the value sigma8sub(+) (<=) 0.2sigma7sub(-) (20.9 MeV) for the 16O excitation energy Esup(*) = 17-24 MeV and sigma8sub(+) (<=) 0.1sigma6sub(-) (16.3 MeV) in the interval Esup(*) = 17-19 MeV. Two 6+ levels of 16O are found with 21.8 and 23.6 MeV excitation energies
