Materials for advanced energy systems
Description
Recent topics on materials used in nuclear energy systems is discussed. First, general directions of research and development of materials in an operating environment are discussed and then recent materials problems are described for nuclear energy systems which are either already existing, under development or to be realized in the future. Topics selected are (1) irradiation embrittlement of pressure vessel steels for LWRs, (2) recent trend for development of high burnup fuels for LWRs, (3) high fluence performance of cladding and wrapper materials for fuel subassemblies of FBRs and (4) high fluence irradiation effects in the first wall and blanket structural materials of a fusion reactor. Radiation effect dependent on the neutron spectrum, hence on a primary knock-on atom (PKA) energy spectrum is one of the most intriguing common topics. Recent progress of understanding high energy cascade are summarized. Importance of modeling is emphasized. (author)
