Solar radio bursts as probes for coronal disturbances
Description
An attempt has been made to summarize some of the highlights of the recent work on solar radio bursts particularly of type II, type III and moving type IV bursts carried out with ground-based, and satelliteborne techniques. Each of these bursts represents a discrete coronal disturbance involving one or more physical processes such as particle acceleration and trapping, excitation of plasma oscillations and their conversion into electromagnetic radiation, generation of MHD shock waves, synchrotron radiation, and plasma instabilities. Type III bursts occur along the open magnetic field lines and have been recorded down to frequencies approximately 30 kHz, which is nearly equal to the local plasma frequency at the earth's orbit. Type II bursts, which have been mapped at 80 MHz, display very large source size and multiple source structure changing with time. The moving type IV sources have been classified into magnetic arch, advancing shock, jets and isolated sources etc. (author)
