Description

The double-strata fuel cycle consisting of the commercial fuel cycle and Partitioning-and-Transmutation (P-T) cycle is proposed to reduce the burden for conditioning and disposal of the high level radioactive waste (HLW). The P-T cycle can be adapted to various fuel cycles for the commercial power plants. The P-T cycle is expected to reduce the amount of HLW and rationalize the waste management. In the present report, introduction scenarios of P-T cycle were obtained based on mass balances analysis of actinide nuclides for several types of commercial nuclear fuel cycle during the next 200 years. Possible contributions to radioactive waste management were also quantified. The SCENARIO code was developed to calculate the mass balance. As the result of the analysis on the scenarios of Pu-recycling in LWRs, Np-recycling fast reactor, MA recycling fast reactor and etc., it was shown that the number of repositories required in the year 2200 would be reduced from 5-9 to 2 by introducing P-T cycle.
