Description

On August 27, 2015, a radiological incident occurred with a 192Ir source (44 Ci; 1.63 TBq) in a Thermal power plant located in Río Turbio, Santa Cruz, during a scintigraphy operation industrial made by an operator and his assistant. On September 8, 2015, the Argentine Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ARN) on the radiological incident. The RNA requested the transfer of the operator and its assistant to the city of Buenos Aires for evaluation in the area of physical and biological dosimetry. On September 9, 2015, blood samples were taken for biological dosimetry and they were referred to the Hospital de Quemados of the City of Buenos Aires for clinical evaluation and treatment. Localized and whole body dose, future cancer risk, and inflammatory response were characterized. Biological dosimetry results confirmed that only the operator was overexposed, who presented radioinduced injuries to the fingers of hand. This event was classified at a level 3 of the INES international scale. Objective: describe the multidisciplinary approach to assess the absorbed dose to the whole body, hands and lens using dosimetries: clinical, biological, physical and computational. Conclusion: The estimation of the dose with a multidisciplinary approach, as it is important in determining health risks in cases of accidental overexposures, allowed guiding medical treatment and contributing to radiological protection decisions in the regulatory framework.
