Comparative Studies of Slow Neutron Scattering by Solid and Liquid Tin

  • 1. Nuclear Physics Division. Aere, Harwell, Didcot, Berks (United Kingdom)

Description

The scattering of 4.0A and 6.2A neutrons by tin as solid (210oC) and liquid (240oC) has been measured. The scattered spectra at six scatter angles between 20o and 90o was analysed by titne-of-flight methods. At the longer wavelength the low intensity elastic scattered peaks are used to derive the incoherent cross-section for tin (0.04 ± 0.01 b ). Sharp steps in scattered spectra for the solid can be identified and similar but broadened steps for the liquid are seen. Using a theory due to Egelstaff, the steps for the solid can be interpreted as the excitation of particular phonons. The single phonon theory for the solid is modified to attempt to account for the different behaviour of the liquids The appreciable scattering observed in the liquid at low energy transfers is not explained in this way. Abstract (French)

(author)

Abstract (Spanish)

(author)
