Behind casing water volume flow rate measurement using gamma ray spectral degradation
Description
This invention describes an apparatus for detecting undesired flow of water in voids behind the casing of a producing well. High energy neutrons are used to activate oxygen 16 in the water and produce nitrogen 16 which decays with a half-life of 7.1 seconds. Gamma ray detectors are used to monitor the gamma rays (6 MeV) from decay of nitrogen 16 and hence establish the flow rate of water behind the casing. (OT)
